Re: What is the lowest point on the Earth not covered by water?

A search for "lowest point on Esrth" quickly showed that the shoreline of the Dead Sea, on the border of Israel and Jordan in the Middle East, is the lowest land area on Earth. The altitude of the Dead Sea shoreline is approximately 1,300 feet (400 meters) below sea level.

The lowest point on Earth is getting even lower. According to an article on Middle East Online, the Dead Sea was 1,293 feet below sea level 40 years ago, but today it's 1,360 feet below sea level. The Friends of the Earth- Middle East environmental organization says the Dead Sea's water level is dropping by about three feet (one meter) every year.

Researchers point to development in the region as the cause of the problem. Dams, reservoirs, and irrigation systems have diverted water from rivers that once fed the sea, greatly reducing the water that flows into it. Mineral extraction has also lowered the Dead Sea water levels.

While this news isn't great for the area, it does secure the Dead Sea's claim as the lowest point on Earth not covered with water.

the shoreline of the Dead Sea .Death Valley is 282 feet below sea level, so it is the lowest point not covered by water in the Western Hemisphere. The lowest in the world is the Turfan depression in central Asia, which is in the very westernmost part of China.

Dead Sea Depression - The lowest point on Earth
Elevation: 413 meters below sea level (approximate and fluctuating)
    Country: Israel, Jordan, Syria
    Latitude/Longitude: 31°32′N 35°29′E

The Dead Sea Depression is an extensive area of land that is below sea level. It contains the Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee, a portion of the Jordan River, large areas of cultivated land and many communities. The shoreline of the Dead Sea is the lowest dry land on Earth. It is approximately 413 meters below sea level. However, this elevation is constantly changing. The surface of the Dead Sea rises and falls as precipitation, evaporation, irrigation, salt production and other natural and human activities consume the water of the Jordan River, the Dead Sea and its tributaries

It should be noted that the Sea of Gallilee, the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea are all part of the same geological feature, the Afro-Syrian Rift (called the "Great Rift" by some). Beit She'an is located in the Jordan Valley, as is Jericho. The shores of the Dead Sea are the lowest part of the rift, and they are home to the lowest human settlements on Earth (the Israeli kibbutzim of Ein Bokek and Ein Gedi, among a few other resort spots). The Israeli city of Tiberias is the lowest city on the planet, on the shores of the Gallilee, at a little over 200 meters below sea level.
